Root canal treatment has a success rate exceeding 90% - but aftercare in the first 48 - 72 hours significantly influences how smoothly you recover. Here is everything you need to know.
🦷 Some soreness after root canal treatment is normal and expected. The tooth and surrounding tissues have been through a procedure. This resolves within a few days in most cases.
Immediately After Treatment
The local anaesthetic will wear off within 2 - 4 hours. During this time, avoid eating on the treated side to prevent biting your cheek or tongue accidentally. Do not drink very hot liquids while numb.
Pain Management
Over-the-counter ibuprofen (400 - 600mg) or paracetamol (1000mg) every 6 - 8 hours is typically sufficient. Ibuprofen has an anti-inflammatory action and is generally more effective for post-dental pain. Take it before the anaesthetic wears off if possible.

The First 48 Hours
Eat soft foods. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy food on the treated side. Continue brushing and flossing normally - the treated tooth still needs cleaning. Avoid very hot foods and drinks as the tooth may be sensitive.
Swelling and Bruising
Minor swelling around the jaw is not unusual after a root canal, particularly for lower molar treatments. A cold compress applied to the outside of the face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for the first 24 hours can help. Swelling that worsens after 48 hours, or spreads to the neck or floor of the mouth, requires urgent attention - contact the practice immediately.

- Severe pain not controlled by over-the-counter medication
- Swelling that worsens or spreads after 48 hours
- The temporary filling falls out
- Fever or feeling unwell
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing

The Temporary Filling
After root canal treatment, a temporary filling is placed. This should be replaced with a permanent filling or crown within 4 - 6 weeks. The temporary material is not designed for long-term use and may leak bacteria back into the canal if left too long. Delaying the permanent restoration significantly reduces the long-term success of the treatment.
Why a Crown is Usually Needed
Root canal treated back teeth (premolars and molars) are at high risk of fracture. The treatment removes the pulp that kept the tooth hydrated and flexible.
