Fizzy Drinks and Your Teeth - What Actually Happens

Diet fizzy drinks erode tooth enamel just as effectively as full-sugar versions. Here is the science - and what you can do to protect your teeth.

Fizzy drinks are one of the most significant dietary threats to dental health in the UK. This includes diet and sugar-free varieties. Understanding why - and what you can do - is an important part of protecting your teeth.

The Problem: Acid, Not Just Sugar

Most patients know that sugar in fizzy drinks causes tooth decay. What is less well understood is that the acid in fizzy drinks - even sugar-free varieties - directly erodes tooth enamel. Carbonation creates carbonic acid. Most fizzy drinks also contain phosphoric acid (cola) or citric acid (lemon/lime varieties). These acids dissolve the mineral structure of enamel in a process called acid erosion.

🥤 Diet Coke has a pH of approximately 3.1. Tooth enamel begins to dissolve at pH below 5.5. Sugar-free fizzy drinks erode enamel just as effectively as full-sugar versions.

Acid Erosion vs Tooth Decay

These are two distinct processes. Tooth decay (caries) is caused by bacteria metabolising sugar and producing acid locally. Acid erosion is caused by direct contact of acidic drink with tooth surfaces - affecting the whole mouth rather than specific areas. Erosion thins enamel, causes sensitivity, and can change the shape and colour of teeth.

The Frequency Effect

Each time you consume an acidic drink, your mouth pH drops below the critical threshold and enamel softens for approximately 30 - 40 minutes. Drinking one can slowly over two hours exposes your teeth to acid for far longer than drinking it quickly in 10 minutes. Sipping fizzy drinks throughout the day is particularly damaging - it keeps the mouth in an acidic state almost continuously.

Practical Advice

  • Drink fizzy drinks quickly rather than sipping over a long period
  • Use a straw to minimise contact with teeth
  • Do not brush immediately after - wait 30 - 60 minutes for enamel to reharden
  • Rinse with water immediately after to neutralise acids
  • Limit consumption to mealtimes if possible
  • Choose water or milk as the primary drink between meals

Signs of Acid Erosion

Increased sensitivity (particularly to cold), teeth that appear shorter or more translucent at the edges, and a yellower appearance (as thinner enamel allows the darker dentine beneath to show through) are all signs of enamel erosion. Once enamel is lost, it cannot regenerate - treatment options include composite bonding or veneers to restore lost tooth structure.
