Paediatric Dentistry in Camberley
Gentle, unhurried dental care for children - from first tooth to teens. We make every visit a positive experience.
At Accord Dental Practice we believe that every child deserves a dentist they actually enjoy visiting. We take extra time with young patients, explain everything at their level, and never rush - because positive early dental experiences set children up for a lifetime of good oral health.
Paediatric Dental Treatments
Fissure Sealants £40 per tooth
The back teeth (molars) have deep grooves and pits on their biting surfaces that are almost impossible to clean properly with a toothbrush. Food and bacteria collect in these grooves, making them the most common site for decay in children. A fissure sealant is a thin protective coating painted directly onto the biting surface of back teeth - filling the grooves and creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that bacteria cannot penetrate.
The procedure is completely painless - no drilling, no injections. We simply clean the tooth surface, apply the sealant, and set it with a small light. It takes just a few minutes per tooth. Sealants typically last 5-10 years and can be reapplied when needed.
Best time for sealants: As soon as the first permanent back teeth appear - usually around age 6-7 for the first molars, and 11-13 for second molars. Early application provides maximum protection during the cavity-prone years.
Fluoride Varnish Application £25 / included in Kids Plan
Fluoride varnish is a concentrated fluoride treatment painted directly onto children's teeth two to four times a year. It works by releasing high levels of fluoride directly into tooth enamel, significantly strengthening it against acid attack and reversing early-stage decay before it becomes a cavity.
Applied in minutes with a small brush, fluoride varnish is painless and sets quickly. We recommend it from the age of three for all children, or earlier if there is a higher risk of decay. Fluoride varnish application is included in the Accord Kids Essentials Plan.
Oral Brushing Care & Hygiene Instruction
Learning correct brushing technique early makes an enormous difference to lifelong oral health. At every child's appointment, we spend time teaching the right way to brush - demonstrating on models, showing children what plaque looks like under a special disclosing agent, and making it fun and engaging rather than a lecture.
We advise on the right toothbrush, the right amount of toothpaste (a smear for under 3s, a pea-sized amount for 3 and over), and why we spit but don't rinse after brushing. We also discuss diet, sugar timing, and what drinks are safe between meals.
The Parent's Role in Children's Oral Health
Parents are the most important factor in their child's dental health. The habits established at home in the early years shape their teeth and attitudes to dental care for life. Here is what we recommend at each stage:
From Birth
- Wipe your baby's gums with a clean damp cloth after feeds
- Never put your baby to bed with a bottle - only plain water if needed
- Do not dip dummies in honey, sugar or juice
- Avoid sharing spoons or cleaning dummies with your mouth - this transmits decay-causing bacteria directly to your baby
First Tooth Onwards (Around 6 Months)
- Start brushing immediately with a soft baby toothbrush
- Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste (at least 1,000ppm - check the label)
- Brush morning and last thing at night - spit, don't rinse
- Book your child's first dental appointment as soon as the first tooth appears
Ages 3-7
- Supervise and assist brushing - children lack the dexterity to brush effectively on their own until around age 7-8
- Increase to a pea-sized amount of toothpaste from age 3 (1,000-1,450ppm fluoride)
- Keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes only
- Offer water and plain milk between meals - no juice, squash or fizzy drinks
- Bring children to dental check-ups every 6 months - regular visits prevent problems and build familiarity with the practice
Ages 7-Teen
- Continue supervising brushing - children still benefit from parents checking until at least age 10
- Introduce flossing or interdental brushes as teeth begin to touch
- Ask about fissure sealants when permanent back teeth appear
- Monitor sports participation - consider a custom mouthguard for contact sports
- Talk openly about diet - energy drinks and excessive fruit juice are major causes of decay in teenagers
Children's Dental Emergencies - What to Do
Dental emergencies in children can be frightening for both parent and child. Knowing what to do makes an enormous difference to the outcome - and to how calm your child stays.
URGENTKnocked Out Permanent Tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (white part) - never touch the root
- If dirty, rinse briefly with milk or cold water - do not scrub
- Try to place it back in the socket immediately - this gives the best chance of saving it
- If not possible, store in milk or have the child hold it in their cheek (not young children)
- Call us immediately on 01276 984356 - time is critical. Get to us within 30 minutes if possible
Important: Do NOT replant baby (milk) teeth - this can damage the permanent tooth underneath. Baby teeth should not be replanted.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
- Rinse the mouth gently with warm water
- Save any pieces of the broken tooth if possible
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling if the face is affected
- Call us for an appointment - most broken teeth can be repaired
Toothache or Dental Pain
- Rinse the mouth with warm water and gently remove any food from around the tooth
- Give age-appropriate pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on packaging)
- Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum
- Call us - same-day appointments are available for children in pain
Dental Abscess
- Signs: swelling on the face or gum, raised temperature, child visibly unwell alongside dental pain
- Call us immediately - dental abscesses require prompt treatment
- If the swelling is affecting the eye, floor of the mouth, or your child has difficulty swallowing or breathing - go to A&E immediately or call 999
Why Accord Dental Practice is Different for Children
Many children grow up dreading the dentist - often because of rushed appointments, impersonal environments, or early experiences that left them anxious. We do things differently.
We Take Time
Children's appointments are never rushed. We allow extra time so your child can explore the dental chair, ask questions, and become comfortable before any examination begins. We work entirely at the child's pace.
Children Enjoy Their Visits
We use friendly language - no scary words like "injection" or "drill". We explain each step, celebrate good behaviour, and make children feel proud of looking after their teeth. Anxious children receive extra care and patience.
Preventative First Approach
Our focus is on preventing problems before they start - through fissure sealants, fluoride varnish, diet advice, and teaching proper brushing technique. Prevention is always better than treatment.
Parents Always Welcome
Parents are always welcome in the surgery. We believe involving parents creates a partnership in children's dental health - and gives anxious children the reassurance of a familiar face beside them.
